(FT) Andrew Walker–Brendan Eich calls forth from us a new public square that is public for all

A few years back, you may recall a “Beer Summit,” held at the White House, where President Obama served as mediator between a notable college professor from Harvard who was wrongfully arrested by a local police officer due to the suspicion that he may have been involved in burglaries. This event seemed helpful in reconciling two seeming intractable parties.

There may be lessons we could learn from that episode, applied for a new day. This week, Mozilla Firefox CEO, Brendan Eich, was forced out of his job after gay activists protested a donation Eich made to Proposition 8, an initiative designed to uphold marriage as the union of a man and woman.

[To get us to move forward as a society] what’s needed is a civil public square where different points of view are tolerated. This perpetual showdown just isn’t sustainable.

  1. Jim the Puritan says:

Christians need to stand firm, realizing there is going to be steadily increasing persecution against them as this country becomes more hostile towards God.

My doctor, when I was getting a checkup on Wednesday, said she had hope that the elections this fall nationally and locally would result in a backlash, and sane people would take back the country. I am not as optimistic as she is, and I pretty much told her so.

This is spiritual warfare, it isn’t about a disagreement among men. Unfortunately, this country is sliding down a slippery slope from which it will not recover unless the Holy Spirit brings a revival.

  2. John Boyland says:

Notice the comments by Ed Johns: the gay lobby won’t agree to disagree here. Andrew’s plea will go unheard. And why should the world compromise with the Gospel? As Lesslie Newbigin has written, there is no such thing as a place of neutrality between Yahweh and Baal. Don’t expect any legal protection for true believers.

I don’t even know if Brandon Eich is a Christian, but it seems he has chosen the way of Jesus: turning the other cheek. And the wrong he has suffered has been noted by others. The true face of political correctness is being revealed.

(And then there’s the factual inaccuracy of the anti-Eich hype: Prop 8 did not remove a single legal right of gay civil unions, except that of being able to call the unions “marriage.”)

  3. New Reformation Advocate says:

I agree with #1 & 2. This stunning incident is as dramatic an example as you could get of how illiberal the supposed “liberals” often are. Like a ship heading into a bad storm, it’s time to get the crew of the ship prepared for the ordeal that lies ahead for the Church. What a crazy, completely confused society we live in.
